Read Andre Dubus's "Killings"

Reading Response:

Write a response to the following prompt (typed, 12 point font, double spaced, one full page minimum):
  • How does Abner Snopes’s motivation for revenge in "Barn Burning"compare with Matt Folwer’s in Andre Dubus’s “Killings”?  How do the victims of each character’s revenge differ? Do you think one character's actions are more justified?  Why?

Barn Burning

Be sure to read this story carefully (more than once).  You can expect a reading quiz and you will also be discussing the story in your first essay assignment.

To prepare for our class discussion, pay attention to Faulkner's descriptions of Abner Snopes as you read.  Look for repeated words like "stiff" "tin" "cold", etc.  Also, think about where the Snopes family fits in to the post- Civil War social structure.
